What are UVC LEDs?
UVC LEDs are compact devices that emit UVC light to destroy dangerous pathogens in water, surface, and air. In addition, UVC LEDs can be used in sensing and instrumentation technologies. Given their small size, UVC LEDs can be easily integrated into a wide range of products- such as water purification systems, air purifiers, emission sensors, and many others.

UVC LEDs for use in emission monitoringHigh real-world NOx emissions from diesel vehicles are an industry-wide problem. Actual on-road emissions differ from emissions measured under controlled conditions in a laboratory due to factors such as road gradient, accelerations, traffic, or weather conditions. New regulatory standards have been proposed which will require measurement of vehicle emissions including NOx in real driving conditions. At the same time, the emission limits have also been made stringent. Thus, there is a need for portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) which can detect lower limits of NOx.
Current technologies for NOx measurement have their own limitations. Electrochemical gas sensors have limited lifetimes and also suffer from cross-response issues to humidity. Similarly, sensors which use nondispersive infra-red (NDIR) spectroscopy are affected by the interference of moisture and CO2 contained in the sample gas. Non-dispersive UV (NDUV) spectroscopy is ideal for measuring smaller NOx concentrations. However, these sensors which use UV lamps today are expensive, require frequent light source replacement, and suffer from performance limitations such as drift. In contrast, NDUV spectroscopy with Optan 235 nm LEDs can reduce PEMS cost due to near-monochromaticity, enable ease of measurement by not heating the gas, and lower cost of ownership due to relatively longer lifetime. In addition, the use of LEDs also offers significant footprint and weight reductions in these systems.
